 Installation Work - R2 Club

2002

"R2 Club" challenges one to look into the tragic reality of child molesting. The news coverage of certain reported cases (21 438 in 2000 according to Steve Tshwete) might leave one with the impression that child molesting is a present day problem predominating in certain communities. The reality is that it is a yesterday problem and a tommorow problem in all our communities.

I use various elements, which include life-sized paper dolls, rag dolls, a large drawing, a camera on a tripod, a soundtrack of a child's song, shadows and odours to create one large work of art. In doing so, I appeal to, and make an onslaught on, all the senses of the visitor.

These everyday elements, placed in specific relation to each other, take on a new and powerful meaning. Visitors entering the gallery will become part of the artwork by casting their own shadows. It will be impossible for them to remain neutral. They will be compelled to see, to think, to feel and to react, and thus by doing so, complete the artwork.
